What is PLA?

PLA (PolyLactic Acid) is a good material to start 3D printing with because it is easily handled by 3D printers. It cools quickly, thus decreasing the likelihood of the printed object becoming warped. It prints at temperatures between 190° and 220°C.  (Colours may vary slightly from the colours shown in the pictures.)

This PLA is made by NatureWorks, an American company known for its innovation and quality. It is a biologically-sourced plastic, made from plants (as opposed to petroleum). This means that all the carbon in it was photosynthesised from CO₂ in the atmosphere – manufacturing PLA reduces greenhouse gas.

PLA is strong and long-lasting (we have a 3D-printed PLA fan vent that has been on the back of our workshop for four years in the rain, sun, and snow, and it is as good as new).  But it can also be biodegraded and thus recycled in high-temperature compost along with plant waste.

How Elefilament makes our PLA filament:

• Quality raw material purchased from NatureWorks, the world’s leading manufacturer of PLA,
• These are thoroughly dried using a desiccant air dryer to prevent air and moisture bubbles, and
• The PLA is extruded to filament at exacting tolerance (0.05mm) to make it easy and consistent to print with.

• Extruder temperature: 190° to 220°C, and
• Platform/bed temperature: 50° – 60°C.

Packaging & Storage
Each 750g reel of Elefilament 1.75mm diameter PLA is enclosed in a sealed plastic bag with silica gel to absorb moisture.  This is placed in a reusable/recyclable cardboard box for protection, which is normally sent to you in another external plastic bag. Orders for larger quantities are sent in a box. As moisture can affect the quality of the filament, we recommend you store your reel in the bag with the gel when not in use and only open it when you are about to first load it into your printer.
